South Korea’s Doosan Robotics Co. is embarking on the development of a collaborative robot (co-robot) solution using artificial intelligence (AI) powered by GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) to bolster its software capabilities,

Doosan Robotics said on Thursday it signed an agreement with Microsoft and Doosan Digital Innovation, leveraging Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI services for the development of a GPT-based robot control system. Azure OpenAI is a cloud service that offers cutting-edge AI systems, including GPT, for various applications.

The core concept behind this collaboration is to apply GPT technology to co-robots, enabling them to autonomously correct errors and perform tasks through iterative learning.

By implementing this solution, programming time will be significantly reduced, leading to improved operational efficiency and versatility.

Generally, when both ramyeon and fried snacks are ordered simultaneously, separate co-robots specialized in each menu item work independently, or one robot prepares the dishes sequentially.

However, managing the simultaneous preparation of more than two dishes posed a challenge, requiring intricate human programming for various scenarios, leading to complications in terms of time and technical expertise.

The upcoming solution aims to simplify this complexity. By training the co-robot only in the individual steps of each dish’s preparation, even when multiple types of dishes are being prepared simultaneously, the robot will autonomously arrange and execute the optimal sequence of actions.

Furthermore, this solution accumulates and utilizes a database of learning data programmed by humans, which means even when the menu changes, there will be no need to start programming from scratch, saving valuable time and effort, according to the company.

“The essence of this GPT-based co-robot solution lies in empowering co-robots to perform intricate and diverse tasks while minimizing programming time,” said William (Junghoon) Ryu, CEO of Doosan Robotics, highlighting that integrating this technology into the company’s upcoming software platform, Dart-Suite, slated for release in the latter half of the year, will further enhance the utility and user-friendliness of co-robots.

Doosan Robotics plans to pilot the GPT-based co-robot solution in the food and beverage sector this year and then consider expanding it to the manufacturing sector.
