Samsung SDI is rushing to hire domestic and foreign talent from the battery industry, in an attempt to raise its global competitiveness in the rapidly growing EV sector.

Samsung SDI on Sunday said it recently held a Tech & Career Forum 2023 in Seoul, a job fair event that attracted 200 Ph.D. level talents from prestigious Korean universities with which the Korean battery maker has been forming partnerships.

The five-hour event, led by Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho, elaborated on the company’s company profile and hiring process and included a seminar on battery technology as well as keynote speeches from executives.

"Samsung SDI is solidifying its fundamentals as well as driving external growth to achieve our goal of emerging as a global top-tier company by 2030," Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho said. “It all comes down to people for this goal. Be the star that shapes Samsung SDI’s bright future.”

Ahn Jae-woo, head of the People team, also enumerated Samsung SDI’s work culture and recruitment process for master’s and Ph.D. holders. Key executives of five major divisions — Automotive & ESS Battery, Small Battery, Electronic Materials, R&D Center and Global Process/Equipment Development Center — gave presentations on the newest tech trends in their respective fields.

The participants could choose themes that interested them and attend the relevant session, which increased engagement levels.

Head of R&D Center Chang Hyuk then spoke on Samsung SDI’s strategies to bolster research and development as he highlighted the company’s technological prowess.

Samsung SDI's latest forum follows the two held in Seoul and New York in 2022.

A similar event is scheduled to be held in Munich next month and in San Francisco in October.

To date, Samsung SDI signed a series of agreements on raising battery experts with Korea's prestigious universities including Seoul National University, KAIST, Postech and Hanyang University, Sungkyunkwan University and UNIST.
