Egypt frees activist Ahmed Douma

Member of the Presidential Pardon Committee Tarek El-Khouly announced on 19 August that President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi issued a pardon decree for a number of activists including Ahmed Douma, who was serving a 15-year prison sentence over charges of violence that occurred in 2011. Douma was a leading figure of the mass protests that led to the ousting of late president Hosni Mubarak. On 19 July, al-Sisi also pardoned researcher Patrick Georges Zaki, lawyer Mohammed al-Baqer and other unnamed prisoners. EPA/STR
