Afghans receive food rations in Kabul

epa10783105 Khalil ur Rehman Haqqani, Taliban minister of Refugees Ministry talks with journalists during a ration distribution ceremony in Kabul, Afghanistan, 03 August 2023. In partnership with the Ministry of Immigrants and Returnees Affairs, the 'Women for Afghan Women' organization has distributed food supplies to 500 vulnerable families in Kabul. The aid package included essential items such as flour, oil, rice, and other foods. This initiative comes as Afghanistan faces a growing poverty crisis, exacerbated by the suspension of development projects, reduced international aid, and a rise in unemployment. The World Food Program has also been forced to decrease aid to Afghanistan, due to financial constraints. In March, the program had to reduce food aid to people facing emergency hunger from 75 percent to 50 percent, and in May, they completely halted aid to 8 million individuals. Currently, the World Food Program is only able to assist 5 million people, while earlier estimates projected 15 million people in Afghanistan would experience severe food insecurity by October.
