Samsung Electronics has established a bureau dedicated to developing future technology under the company's Device eXperience (DX) division, according to industry sources Tuesday.
The DX division is responsible for mobile devices and consumer electronics. The bureau will be headed by Vice President Kim Kang-tae who leads Samsung Research’s technology strategy team. Kim is known as a software engineering expert.
The move is seen as the Korean tech giant’s way of making a breakthrough amid cutthroat competition in the electronic devices market.
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong is known to have emphasized the importance of developing new technology.
“We have to invest in technology that's nonexistent in this world,” Lee said last year.
“The most valuable traits are human resources and technology." He continued, "We have to foster and invite talents who can change the world regardless of their age and nationality.”
Samsung Electronics has also established a team under Samsung Research dedicated to developing emerging technologies. Samsung Research is an advanced technology research and development (R&D) team under the DX division. Separately, a set of new teams dedicated to emerging technologies have also been established under major business divisions. The teams will develop new technologies, including creating a new form factor — the size, shape and physical specifications — for products.
Samsung’s Visual Display division will set up a new team that will oversee the development process of what has been labeled the Movable Project which integrates a projector and a robot.
The Consumer Electronics division will set up a new team that utilizes artificial intelligence in its product lineup.
