Black Sea beaches continue to attract visitors despite the Ukraine war

epaselect epa10778107 People rest at a beach on the Black Sea in Sukhumi, capital of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia, 17 July 2023 (issued 31 July 2023). Abkhazia is a breakaway territory which was part of Georgia until 2008, and it is currently recognized by a minority of world countries, including Russia. Its Black Sea-related tourism has always been a highlight since the former USSR time. Its moderate climate, palace-styled sanatoriums, palm trees and beaches, attracted scores of soviet and foreign tourists. In spite of aging infrastructures, tourism remains an important source of income, with Russian passport holders flocking to enjoy a summer on the Black Sea. Some infrastructures still bear traces of past conflicts, yet the climate and new investments in the tourism business make the area a good option for many of those who cannot easily travel abroad since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.
