epa10778181 A handout photo made available by Afghanistan's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice shows members of Taliban setting fire to a pile of musical instruments and equipment on the outskirts of Herat, Afghanistan, 30 July 2023 (issued 31 July 2023). Taliban officials in Herat province set fire to a number of musical instruments, considering their use to be a sin according to Sharia law. Uzair-ur-Rahman Mohajer, the deputy director of the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Herat, stated that the instruments were collected and destroyed based on the fatwa (decree) of scholars. The Taliban views musical instruments as depravity and corruption and sees their use as forbidden, reflecting the strict enforcement of their interpretation of Islamic law in areas under their control.
