South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport plans to join hands with location-based service providers to build an internet-based platform that provides reliable data obtained via a newly developed satellite system.

The ministry signed a business agreement with mobility service providers, including T Map Mobility and Kakao Mobility Corp. on Thursday. Mobility startups such as LBStech Inc. also joined the partnership.

The satellite system, referred to as the Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS), is capable of offering users highly reliable location data by using geostationary satellites.

The system improves the global positioning system (GPS) error to 1.0 to 1.6 meters from the previous 15 to 33 meters, which ensures the reliability of information.

The ministry strives to build the system to make it available in the aviation industry as early as the end of this year.

The ministry also aims to use the system in broader sectors of mobility, such as urban air traffic (UAM), mobility, and smartphone location services, including autonomous vehicles, as part of its effort to give more access to the data offered by the system.

For example, establishing an internet-based platform will enable seamless navigation information reception, even in urban areas, and allow for KASS data processing on smartphones without needing a receiver.

The ministry plans to gather ideas from the companies on improving access to data and data utilization while offering technical guidance and advice on effectively utilizing location information.
