Who Knew the Colosseum Was So Old? Tourist Apologizes for Defacement

A man seen on video last month using his keys to etch his love for his girlfriend on a wall in the Colosseum in Rome has written a letter of apology, saying he had no idea the nearly 2,000-year-old monument was so ancient.

“I admit with deepest embarrassment that it was only after what regrettably happened that I learned of the monument’s antiquity,” the man ? identified by his lawyer as 31-year-old Ivan Danailov Dimitrov ? wrote in a letter dated July 4 and addressed to the Rome prosecutor’s office, the mayor of Rome and “the municipality of Rome.”

Portions of the letter were first published Wednesday in the Rome daily newspaper Il Messaggero.

In it, Dimitrov acknowledged the “seriousness of the deed I committed” and offered his “heartfelt and sincere apologies to Italians and the entire world for the damage done to a monument, which is, in fact, heritage of all humanity.” Dimitrov offered to “sincerely and concretely” right his wrong and redeem himself.

The carving came to light last month after a fellow tourist in Rome filmed a man scratching “Ivan + Hayley 23/6/23” into a brick on a wall of the Colosseum. The video went viral, and “Ivan,” whose identity was then not known, was widely rebuked for his devil-may-care attitude.

The defaced brick was actually part of a wall built during a mid-19th century restoration of the monument, which was inaugurated in the first century A.D. But that made little difference to Colosseum authorities, who said it didn’t change the fact that the act was vandalism.

Dimitrov was eventually identified by Italian military police officers. Roberto Martina, the police commander who oversaw the operation, said they tracked Dimitrov to England.

Alexandro Maria Tirelli, Dimitrov’s lawyer, said his client may get between two and five years in prison and a fine up to 15,000 euros, about $16,300. Tirelli said he was hoping for a plea bargain that will allow his client to pay a fine but serve no jail time.

Dimitrov’s apology, the lawyer said, was an attempt to make clear “that he had pulled what he thought was a harmless stunt.”

“I hope this apology will be accepted,” Dimitrov wrote in the letter.

지난달 이탈리아 로마 콜로세움 벽에 사랑 문구를 열쇠로 새기는 비디오가 공개됐던 남성이 7월 4일(현지 시간) 사과문을 발표했다. 약 2000년의 역사를 지닌 콜로세움이 그렇게 오래 된 유적인지 미처 알지 못하고 벌인 일이라는 내용이다.

“너무 부끄럽지만, 후회할 일을 벌인 뒤에야 콜로세움이 이토록 역사가 오래된 유적임을 알게 된 것을 인정합니다.”

남성의 변호인에 따르면 사건을 벌인 이 남성의 이름은 이반 다바이로브 드미트로브(31세)다. 그가 쓴 사과문은 로마 검찰당국과 로마 시장, 그리고 로마시 앞으로 전달됐다. 그 내용 중 일부는 로마의 일간지 일 메사게로에 먼저 공개됐다.

사과문에 따르면 드리트로브는 “내가 벌인 일의 심각성을 알게 됐다”면서 “모든 인류의 유산인 콜로세움에 피해를 입힌 점에 대해 마음 속 깊이 우러난 진심어린 사과의 뜻을 이탈리아인들과 세계인들에게 표한다”고 적었다. 그는 “진심으로 명확하게 내가 벌인 잘못을 바로잡고 만회하고 싶다”고도 했다.

이 남성의 행동은 남성이 콜로세움 벽에 ‘이반+헤일리 23/6/23’라는 문구를 열쇠로 새기는 장면을 다른 관광객이 비디오로 찍어 공개하며 세상에 알려졌다. 비디오는 소셜미디어에 빠르게 퍼져 나갔고, 신원이 알려지지 않았던 ‘이반’에게는 아무렇지도 않게 유적을 훼손하는 행동에 대한 비난이 빗발쳤다.

훼손된 벽은 1세기에 지어진 콜로세움 중 이탈리아가 19세기 중순 복원한 부분이었지만, 콜로세움 당국은 연도와 무관하게 해당 행위가 공공 기물 파손죄에 해당한다고 밝혔다. 이탈리아 헌병 당국이 남성을 추적해, 그의 실명이 드리트로브이며 영국 관광객이란 사실을 밝혀냈다.

드미트로브의 변호인은 그가 2~5년의 징역형에 1만5000유로, 약 1만6300달러의 벌금을 내야 할 처지라고 밝혔다. 변호사는 유죄를 인정하고 벌금을 더 많이 내는 방식으로 징역형을 피하는 ‘양형 거래’를 추진 중이라고 덧붙였다.

이번 사과문은 “나쁜 의도를 가지고 유적을 훼손한 것이 아니라는 것을 명확히 밝히기 위한 시도”라고 변호인은 설명했다. 드미트로브는 “이 사과가 받아들여 지길 바란다”고 사과문에 적었다.
