Yemen conflict causes more damage to fishing sector

epa10750500 Yemeni fishermen moor their boat at a port in the port city of Hodeidah, Yemen, 16 July 2023. Coastal communities in Yemen have suffered greatly in the nine-year long conflict since the fishery sector lost nearly 6.9 billion US dollar as a result of damage to harbours, landing centres and boats, according to statistics by Yemen’s Fisheries Authority. The conflict has pushed up prices for fishing tools and fuel. Yemen’s total annual fisheries production amounted to roughly 200,000 tons prior to the conflict in the Arab country in 2015 which has caused a drop in fisheries production by half, according to statistics by the Yemeni government. Yemen’s coastline stretches more than 2,500 km along three seas; Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea. EPA/YAHYA ARHAB
