The Ministry of Education announced it designated 12 regions as special zones for international education on Thursday, with some cities planning to offer internships and job opportunities for international students.
A total of 12 regions, including Jung District, Nam District and Haeundae District in Busan, Hwaseong in Gyeonggi and Seogwipo on Jeju Island, were selected as special zones for international education.
The regions will get financial support from the government until 2027. The funding can be used to support international students and provide international education to their residents by offering more language learning and cultural exchange opportunities.
One of the cities that aims to attract more international students is Cheonan, South Chungcheong.
The city announced it plans to offer internship opportunities for international students attending universities in the city.
Dangjin, South Chungcheong, will be using the funding to offer more job opportunities to foreigners who decide to live in the city.
"Being designated as a special zone for international education, we will do our best to become Korea's leading educational city by attracting international talent and linking them to our local industries," a Dangjin spokesperson said.
