South Korea’s top portal Naver Corp. is strengthening its short-form content service, which refers to videos that are under 1 minute, as popularity grows among the users.

According to Naver on Tuesday, 13,000 people applied for the recruitment of creators for Clip, Naver’s short-form service, between June 20 and July 7.

The recruitment was in five categories – fashion and beauty, leisure, sports, popular spots, and daily life. The number of applicants was three times more than what Naver had expected.

Naver said that the popularity among the applicants was driven by the financial incentives worth a total of 1 billion won ($771,128) for content creators.

The platform plans to give 10 million won to creators with the highest views in each category between August and December and 30 million won to creators with the most number of clicks at the end of this year.

Clip creators will get monthly cashable points worth 150,000 won available in Naver Pay.

Most of the applicants were creators with no accounts on global social media networks, such as Tiktok and Instagram Reels, or online bloggers interested in Clip.

Naver will deploy the Clip content in a new spot inside the app. The company is expected to explore ways to share with creators revenue based on the clicks as it believes that profit for creators are essential for them to create content that entices users.

“We will consider a profit model for creators after Clip is established,” said an unnamed official from Naver. “The service holds appeal as short-form content created by shops in Naver Shopping helps generate more profit.”
