The five commanders from Azovstal were exchanged for 55 Russian soldiers on 22 September 2022. Under the terms of the exchange from Russia, commander of Azov Denys Prokopenko 'Redis', deputy commander of Azov Svyatoslav Palamar 'Kalyna', senior officer of 'Azov' Oleh Khomenko, commander of the 36th Separate Brigade of Marines Serhiy Volynsky 'Volyna' and commander of the 12th Brigade of National Guard Denys Shleha were to be in Turkey under the personal protection of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan until the end of the war.
