The Zaritskys, a family tries to rebuild its life as the war in Ukraine enters its 500th day

Before the war there were 463 households, 78 of them were destroyed during active combat in the region. One of these was Zaritsky's family house. On 10 March 2022, Igor Zaritsky (39), his wife Olga (37), and their three children, Julia (16), Yehor (10) and Vita (3), hid from shelling in the basement of their house, when it was damaged and began to burn. Their neighbor helped Olga and the children to escape to the nearby village of Zarudddia, where Igor found them the next day. Later they traveled to Malyn, Zhytomyr, Zviahil, stopping at relatives and friends' places. After the Russian army was forced out from the Kyiv region in April 2022, the local population slowly returned to their villages. The Zaritsky family returned to their home on 08 May. Near their destroyed house, they built a makeshift shelter, where they spent the summer. Later in Autumn, they moved to a temporary module house, given to them as humanitarian aid, where they spent one winter. Step by step, they try to manage their life in the unusual conditions and rebuild a house for them to return to a more normal life. They bought a horse they named Javelina (Olyk, the horse they previously had was killed in a shelling), and are waiting for a possible humanitarian grant, to buy a cow which can cost as much as 1000 euros. Their two elder children attend school online since the war started, on top of their home, the school had also been destroyed in a shelling, they are now on summer vacations so they help their parents to care for their younger sibling, and with the household chores. Igor, the dad, works as a forester, his wife Olga who used to work as a post office Manager, is now a stay at home mum, sometimes doing a side job when it is available.
