Smithsonian museum reconstructs Weatherbreak geodesic dome

epa10732808 A team of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and the Catholic University's School of Architecture and Planning work to reconstruct North America's first large-span geodesic dome, 'Weatherbreak,' at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, USA, 07 July 2023. The exhibit, 'Reconstructing Weatherbreak - Geodesic Domes in an Age of Extreme Weather,' running through 27 July 2023, is a reconstruction of Jeffrey Lindsay's 1950 structure built to survive large impacts and extreme weather conditions. The dome has a volume of twenty thousand cubic feet and can sustain winds up to two hundred miles per hour but weighs less than fifteen hundred pounds. Geodesic domes have been built to shield radars for refugee shelters in natural disaster areas and at military compounds in the arctic circle. EPA/MICHAEL REYNOLDS
