부산에서 처음 만난 또래 여성을 살해하고 시신을 잔혹하게 훼손한(brutally mutilate the body) 20대 여성(woman in her 20s)은 사이코패스일 가능성이 크다. 범인은 우발적 범행(accidental crime)이었다는 말 외엔 진술을 거부하고 있다고(refuse to make a statement) 한다.

사이코패스(psychopath)는 반사회적 인격 장애(antisocial personality disorder)에 따른 별난 성격적 특성과 행동(eccentric character traits and behaviors)을 나타낸다. 얼핏 보기엔(at first glance) 매력적이고 카리스마가 있는 듯해서 현혹되기 쉽다(be easy to be seduced). 그럴듯한 말로 금세 다른 사람을 자기편으로 만든다(win others over with their smooth talk).

소시오패스(sociopath)로도 불리는 이들은 뚜렷한 이유 없이 거짓말을 한다(lie for no apparent reason). 병적인 거짓말쟁이(pathological liar)다. 복잡한 이야기를 꾸미고 날조해(weave and fabricate intricate tales) 다른 사람이 자신의 이해관계에 맞추도록 조종하는 데 능하다(be adept at manipulating others to serve their own interests). 게다가 공감 능력, 회한(悔恨), 죄책감이 결여돼 있어(lack empathy ability, remorse and guilt) 남에게 상처 주는 것을 즐긴다(enjoy hurting others). 사회 규범 따위는 완전히 묵살한다(completely disregard societal norms).

감정을 느끼는 체 흉내를 내지만(pretend to feel emotions and mimic it) 진심 어린 것이 아니다(be not genuine). 몰인정하고 냉담해서(be heartless and callous) 자신이 초래한 다른 사람의 고통과 괴로움에 무관심한 태도를 보이며(display an indifferent attitude), 자신의 행위에 좀처럼 책임을 지려 하지 않는다(rarely take responsibility for their actions). 잘못을 범했다는 사실을 결코 인정하지 않고, 자신의 모든 문제는 남 탓으로 돌린다(blame others for all their problems). 자신에겐 잘못이 없는 것처럼 보이기 위해 현실을 왜곡한다(distort reality).

사이코패스는 충동적이고 무모하다(be impulsive and reckless). 장차 빚어질 결과에 대한 고려 없이 결정을 내려버리고(make decisions without consideration for the potential consequences), 범죄 또는 반사회적 행동을 자행한다(commit criminal or antisocial behavior). 장기적 목표(long-term goal)나 미래에 대한 계획(plan for the future)은 없다. 오로지 현재를 찰나적으로 살아갈(live in the presence)뿐이다.

사이코패스가 끔찍한 이유는 그 잔인함뿐 아니라 평상시엔 정상적인 인간인 것처럼 가장하는 그들의 가증스러운 능력(heinous ability to masquerade as normal human beings)에 있다.
