You Xianlong, longest-serving engineer at Tibet's Ngari Observatory

epa10660236 The Ngari Observatory in Ngari Prefecture, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, 22 May 2023 (issued 28 May 2023). You Xianlong, a 36-year-old resident engineer at the Ngari Observatory, is responsible for equipment observation and operation maintenance along with seven colleagues. He is also the longest-serving engineer at the observatory, with 17 years of service. Selecting an observatory site is a complex process that involves geological studies as well as the evaluation of factors such as the number of clear nights, astronomical seeing conditions, etc. Tibet's Ngari region, with an average altitude of over 4,500 meters, has proven to be an ideal location for establishing an astronomical observation base with full bandwidth. After over ten years of construction, the Ngari Observatory has now become one of the best astronomical observatories in the Northern Hemisphere.
