Over 800 looted antiquities were turned over to the National Museum of Sana'a after being recovered from artifacts local collectors and smugglers over the past 16 years, the Houthis-held culture authorities has reported. The objects, dating back to different time periods BCE, include funerary stelae, carved and inscribed stones, pieces of alabaster statues and metalworks collected from different archaeological sites throughout the history of ancient Yemen. The ongoing war in Yemen has led to an increase in the smuggling of looted antiquities, taking advantage of the fragile security situation. The National Museum of Sana'a re-opened its doors to visitors on 20 May, over 10 years after it was closed due to restorations and the prolonged conflict in Yemen. EPA/YAHYA ARHAB
