Iraqi activist opens wetlands-inspired restaurant to raise environmental awareness

In 2019, Laith restored an old Baghdadi house to establish Darbunah restaurant using traditional building materials he brought from the marshes, including walls made out of reeds, colorful stitched cushions, wooden furniture and pictures of the marshes landscape. Laith is also breeding rare Iraqi reptile species and birds on the roof of the restaurant that customers and children can interact with them. He says 'I wanted to make the restaurant a center for organizing workshops for school students and children to educate people about the importance of preserving the environment, especially the marshes in southern Iraq'.
