Construction work at Qush Tepa Canal in Afghanistan

The Qush Tepa Canal construction project in northern Balkh province is a major infrastructure project funded by national revenue and executed by the Afghanistan National Development Company. The 280 km long and 100 m wide canal is set to irrigate 500,000 hectares of land in Balkh, Jawzjan, and Faryab provinces, and resolve water shortage issues in the region. Officials in the National Development Department say that the first phase of the work will be completed in the next forty days. The first phase of the canal work is about 108 km, which is about 80 percent progressed. Private companies and thousands of workers are involved in the project, and according to Balkh Governor, the work is progressing well. EPA/STRINGER
