Chun Woo-won, the grandson of former president, the late Chun Doo-hwan. Kwon Do-hyun

The Narcotic Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency sent the case of Chun Woo-won (27), the late president Chun Doo-hwan’s grandson, to the prosecutors for allegedly using various illegal drugs on April 28. However, they did not detain him.

According to the police, Chun Woo-won is suspected of using a number of controlled narcotics (violation of the Narcotics Control Act) in the United States. But the police did not believe that Chun took the drugs regularly.

Chun was seen doing drugs while streaming live on YouTube in the U.S. on March 17. He mentioned the names of some illegal substances--the psychotropic drug, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as Ecstasy, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic drug--and swallowed pills with water.

The police arrested Chun at the Incheon International Airport when he arrived from the U.S. on March 28. He was released the next day, but he admitted that he used marijuana and DMT. A drug test by the National Forensic Service came back positive as well. Based on the test results, the police called Chun in again on April 20 and asked him about how he came to take the drugs.

The police handed Chun’s case over to the prosecutors, but did not detain him, after taking into consideration that he admitted to his drug use and that he voluntarily returned to South Korea.
