Cumulative global sales of Hyundai Motor Co.’s premium brand Genesis topped 900,000 units in March, raising expectations that the sales will hit the 1 million-unit milestone this year on growing popularity of its sedans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

Hyundai Motor said on Tuesday that the Genesis brand sold 903,874 units globally as of March this year. They include 633,318 units at home and 270,556 units abroad. The achievement comes less than 8 years after the brand was launched in November 2015. The Genesis brand added 100,000 units to its sales in five months after reaching 800,000 units in October last year.

Genesis sales have been on a steady rise.

The brand sold 55,936 units in the first quarter of this year, up 11.1 percent from the same period a year ago. Industry insiders note that Genesis’s sales will likely top 1 million units in July or August.

Sedans accounted for 67.1 percent of the entire cumulative Genesis sales and SUVs 32.9 percent.

By model, G80 midsize sedan posted the biggest sales with 359,579 units, accounting for 39.8 percent of the entire sales. The sales of other sedans G70 and G90 stood at 122,997 units and 123,563 units, respectively.

A total of 131,972 GV70 SUVs were sold and 149,959 G80 SUVs despite their later launches compared with the sedans, thanks to the growing preference for recreational vehicles (RVs) and rising exports to North America.

Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the Genesis brand are also on the rise after they were released in the market in July 2021.

Genesis’s electrified G80, GV60, and GV70 posted sales of 6,228 units, 15,804 units, and 5,197 units, respectively.

Genesis EVs sold 5,599 units in the first quarter, accounting for up to 10 percent of the entire Genesis sales.

Genesis brand cars accounted for 5.4 percent of Hyundai Motor’s global sales at the end of March.

“Genesis is a full-fledged business in which Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun Chung engaged in every stage of its development, ranging from planning to governance restructure,” said an unnamed source from the automobile industry. “It is becoming a luxury automotive brand at home and abroad faster than expected.”
