Applications for volunteers for the 2024 Gangwon Youth Olympics opened Monday, with 2,030 volunteer positions available at the Games that kick off on Jan. 19 next year.
The 2023 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics Organizing Committee announced Monday that volunteer applications will be accepted from Monday through May 31 via volunteers.gangwon2024.org .
Anybody older than 15 can apply, and the organizing committee is encouraging young people in particular consider volunteering as the Youth Olympics is a tournament for teenagers.
Volunteer roles will cover eight different job areas: Athlete support, media operations, communications and technology, events and protocol, competition operations, general operations, medical support and regional support.
Volunteers will be provided with 2024 Gangwon Youth Olympics uniforms, meals and, where applicable, accommodation and transport. All volunteer work at the Gangwon Games will also be recognized as official volunteer hours.
According to the organizing committee, international students and foreign residents living in Korea are welcome to apply for volunteer roles, but will need some Korean conversation skills in order to understand their role and work with the rest of the team.
Some Korean volunteers will also need foreign language skills if their role involves communicating with athletes or other officials.
The 2024 Gangwon Youth Olympics kicks off on Jan. 19 next year and runs through Feb. 1. It is the fourth edition of the Games and the first to be held outside of Europe.
A total of 1,900 athletes from 70 countries are expected to compete in the Olympics, with 81 medals on the line across 15 different events. With the addition of support staff and Olympic officials, 6,000 people are expected to be involved in the Games.
Like the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, events will be held across the eastern Gangwon region, spread between the mountainous areas of Pyeongchang, Jeongseon and Hoengseong and the coastal Gangneung.
