Lotte Wellfood, formerly known as Lotte Confectionery, is participating in the global eco-friendly initiative RE100.
Short for “Renewable Electricity 100,” the campaign is participated in voluntarily by companies worldwide, aiming to supply 100 percent of their electricity with renewable solar and wind energy. The campaign was started by multinational non-profit organization The Climate Group, and subscribed companies are those which use more than 100 gigawatt hours annually.
Apple and Google have already participated in and achieved their goal through the campaign.
Lotte Wellfood aims to achieve the goal by 2040.
“The subscription to the RE100 initiative is Lotte Wellfood’s first step toward growing into a sustainable global food company,” said Lotte Wellfood’s CEO Lee Chang-yeop. “We will actively promote the campaign with responsibility.”
Lotte Wellfood currently runs eight plants using solar energy including those in Cheonan, Hoengseong and Kimcheon, which will expand into other factories as well.
The company is also cutting down on energy consumption through building infrastructures such as heat recovery steam generators and steam compressors.
