Protest in Bucharest against special pensions

epa10563900 A Romanian volunteer woman wears a yellow mask during a protest against special pensions held in front of the government headquarters, in Bucharest, Romania, 07 April 2023. About 200 people, organized by three NGOs, gathered in Victoriei Square to demand the cutting of special pensions. The protest was triggered by the fact that ruling parties delayed the cutting of special pensions. Romania has a special pension system legislated since the end of the 90s, originally designed for magistrates. The system was later extended to military personnel, diplomats and parliament members, today some pensions exceeding the monthly salary of the President of Romania. More than 185,000 Romanians receive monthly special pensions totaling an amount from which 100 minimum pensions could be paid. In 2022, the subsidy granted to special pensions represented 0.83 percent of GDP. Approximately 150,000 Romanians signed a petition for the cutting of all special pensions. Slogan on mask reads: 'Cut the Special Pensions, Not The Forests!'. EPA/ROBERT GHEMENT
