‘Noah’s Ark’: the UK seed bank saving the future of wild plants

The Millennium Seed Bank (MSB) is an Ark of 2.4 billion seeds acting as an insurance policy to stop the worlds plant species becoming extinct. The MSB is the largest ex-situ plant conservation project in the world holding 98,000 collections of 40,000 species from 190 countries in all 35 biodiversity hotspots in the world. Seeds arrive from around the world and are cleaned, x-rayed and stored in -20 C acclimatised underground fire, bomb, flood and radiation proof vaults. The seeds are stored for future generations and are available for research and breeding purposes. Seeds are regularly germinated and grown to test for viability.
