“Suzume” (2022) became the second highest-grossing Japanese film in Korea as of Tuesday, surpassing the 2016 animated film “Your Name” (2016), also directed by Makoto Shinkai.

According to the Korea Box Office Information System (Kobis), “Suzume” garnered over 3.8 million in ticket sales as of Tuesday, 27 days after it was first released in Korea on March 8.

The highest-grossing Japanese film in Korea as of Tuesday is “The First Slam Dunk,” with 4.3 million in ticket sales. With “Suzume” remaining in the No. 1 spot at the box office for 27 consecutive days, the highest-grossing Japanese film in Korea may change in the near future.

The film’s distributor Media Castle announced on Tuesday that the Korean dubbed version of “Suzume” will be premiering in May along with director Shinkai’s previous films “Your Name” and “Weathering with You” (2019) which will also be re-released with new dubbing.

Renowned voice actors Jang Ye-na, Jung Ju-won, Lee Ji-hyeon and Lee Kyung-tae will be featured in the dubbed version of “Suzume.”

“Suzume” is a fantasy animation about a young girl who tries to prevent natural disasters after discovering mysterious doors that lead to unexpected places in Japan. The film has messages of hope and comfort for those who live with loss and uncertainty after the Tohoku earthquake in 2011.
