Hyundai Heavy Industries’ exceeded 200 million brake horsepower (BHP) in cumulative marine engine production for the first time in the world, the company announced Wednesday.

The shipbuilding subsidiary of HD Hyundai held a ceremony at its engine production plant in Ulsan on Wednesday to mark its production milestone and started up a new 74,720-brake horse power two-stroke ship engine.

The achievement was reached 44 years after the company started producing large-sized shipping engines in 1979. Two-hundred million BHP is equivalent to the combined output of 1.25 millionmidsize sedans.

The latest two-stroke ship engine is a methanol dual-fuel engine that can selectively use eco-friendly methanol and diesel, and is equipped with a low-flashpoint fuel supply system developed by Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering — the parent company of Hyundai Heavy.

The company said the engine will be installed in the world’s first mega-sized methanol-fueled 16,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit containership.

“Hyundai Heavy has played a pivotal role in making Korea the world's best shipbuilding powerhouse by producing high-quality engines for the past 40 years,” said Han Ju-seog, chief operating officer of Hyundai Heavy’s Engine and Machinery Division. “We will continue to strengthen our technology and lead the shipbuilding industry to make a leap forward."
