Cumulative sales of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. vehicles are expected reach 150 million units in in the first half of this year, a new feat achieved 61 years after they started selling cars in 1962.

This new milestone is significant because it was achieved in a situation where global car production was disrupted due to an automotive chip supply crisis during the pandemic.

Hyundai Motor Group sold 3.3 million units in the first half of last year, ranking third in the world after Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen Group.

According to data compiled by Yonhap News on Tuesday, the two brands sold a total of 147,449,384 units in Korea and around the world from 1962 to last year. The cumulative sales of Hyundai Motor and Kia reached 92.81 million and 54.64 million, respectively.

The number remaining to reach the 150 million mark is about 2.55 million units and considering that Hyundai and Kia’s sales target for this year is 7.52 million units, it is certain that the mark will be reached this year.

If their monthly sales go as expected, they will be able to break through the mark in April or in May.

Kia and Hyundai started selling cars in Korea in 1962 and 1968, respectively, with exports starting in 1975 and in 1976, respectively.
