SK hynix developed an advanced mobile memory chip, which the chipmaker claims has the world’s fastest speed.
Named low-power double data rate 5 Turbo, or LPDDR5T, the latest dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) product has a data transfer rate of up to 9.6 gigabits per second, according to SK hynix Wednesday.
It is 13 percent faster than its predecessor LPDDR5X introduced in November.
The company said that it is the fastest data rate in the industry so far.
An LPDDR is an industry-standard interface for mobile DRAMs. The LPDDR5X is the seventh generation version of the low-power DRAM interface, and SK hynix’ LDPPR5T is an advanced model of the LPDDR5X that operates in the ultra-low voltage range.
“SK hynix pushed the technological boundaries once again, only two months after we introduced the previous LPDDR5X DRAM with a data rate of up to 8.5 gigabits per second,” said a SK hynix spokesperson.
SK hynix expects that the LPDDR5X DRAM’s application will be extended to data-heavy tasks, such as machine learning and augmented reality technologies.
The LPDDR5X DRAM, which is based on 10-nanometer process nodes, will begin mass production in the latter half of the year.
SK hynix added that it provided sample products of the LPDDR5T chip to its customers.
The sample was offered in a 16-gigabyte multi-chip package with a combined processing capacity of 77 gigabits per second. The module can transfer 15 full high-definition movies in a second, SK hynix explained.
“With the development of the latest LPDDR5T, we have met the customers’ demand for ultra-high-performance products,” said Ryu Sung-soo, head of DRAM product planning at SK hynix.
