SK Group, South Korea’s third-largest conglomerate, is set to rename its affiliates under Chairman Chey Tae-won’s emphasis on pursuing fundamental change and corporate vision.

According to Korea Intellectual Property Information Search (KIPRIS) on Tuesday, SK Inc., the investment arm of SK Group, has completed applications of three trademarks - SK green, SK echorus, and SK humost. Registrations were completed in 2020 and 2021.

SK is one of the top conglomerates that is most active in renaming its affiliates. The conglomerate recently changed the name of SK lubricants, a lubricant manufacturer, to SK enmove, and that of SKC solmics, a chip materials and component investment firm, to SK enpluse.

The name changes reflect Chairman Chey’s strong will to seek fundamental change.

“Names with the words energy and chemical limit our ability to seek changes from inside,” Chey said, in a forum in 2019. “They may be boastful names in the past but may not be aligned with the social value now or can be regarded as a company harming the environment.”

SK Group also changed the name of SK energy engaged in refining and petrochemical business to SK innovation in 2011.

Experts noted that SK Group picks names to build future-oriented and innovative identities.

SK E&S and SK gas are among the candidates for the name change. SK green, one of the three names SK filed for a trademark, is the most popular among the affiliates.

SK Group has been putting out efforts to engage actively in hydrogen business for carbon neutrality.
