Samsung Engineering Co. bagged a 1.6 trillion won ($1.3 billion) contract for an ethylene cracker plant construction project in Qatar.

Under the agreement entered with Ras Laffan Petrochemicals on Sunday, Samsung Engineering will carry out the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) process of the ethylene cracker to be set up in Ras Laffan Industrial City, an industrial hub located 80 kilometers north of Doha.

Samsung Engineering won the EPC project in a consortium with Taiwan’s CTCI Corp. The project is worth 3.1 trillion won in total, with Samsung Engineering owning a 51.27 percent share and CTCI 48.73 percent. Once completed in August 2026, the ethylene cracker plant will be capable of producing 2.08 million tons of ethylene annually, the largest in the world.

The project is part of the bigger Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project, run by a joint venture between Qatar’s state-run energy company Qatar Energy and U.S. chemical giant Chevron Phillips Chemical.
