Samsung and LG to flaunt foldable, stretchable display innovation

Samsung and LG will showcase a wide range of upgraded foldable and stretchable displays in addition to new models of “smarter” TVs and monitors at the upcoming CES 2023, the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show to take place in Las Vegas, U.S. on Jan. 5.

LG Display Co. will feature small- and medium-sized, foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and automotive screens at its booth during the exhibition.

Its 17-inch foldable OLED display can be used in laptops, tablet PCs and portable monitors. It is known to be almost crease-free along the folding zones.

The 8-inch 360-degree foldable OLED display can be folded back and forth. It can endure more than 200,000 times of folding and has a special folding structure that minimizes wrinkles in the folding area.

LG’s display manufacturer will also unveil a 34-inch plastic OLED (P-OLED) for automotive use. This product has an extra-large screen across the vehicle dashboard and an ergonomic design, which gives an at-a-glance view of the instrument panel and navigation.

Samsung Display Co. will disclose the world’s first Flex Hybrid, which combines two innovative technologies--foldable and slidable. Flex Hybrid has foldable technology embedded on the left side of the screen and slider technology on the right.

If you unfold the left panel, you can enjoy movies or YouTube on a 10.5-inch, 4:3 aspect ratio screen or, with the right screen pulled to the end, 12.4-inch large screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10.

LG Electronics. Inc. will showcase the 2023 model of “OLED evo” that boasts a brighter and clearer display. It offers enhanced brightness and clarity with its own video processing technology that adjusts the brightness for each video scene and precise light control technology. The 65-inch OLED evo is up to 70 percent brighter than a regular OLED TV with the same screen size, the company claims.

LG’s 2023 smart TV model also provides a customized user experience. Users can personalize their webOS home screens just like their smartphones. For example, a sports buff who enjoys watching sports games can bring a sports app he or she frequently uses to the home screen.

Samsung Electronics Co. will exhibit four new products, including the world’s first dual ultra-high resolution (UHD) gaming monitor, “Odyssey Neo G9.” Samsung Electronics focuses on gaming monitors for this year‘s CES. As games that require fancy graphics are being released, there’s increasing demand for gaming monitors with high-end features such as OLED panels.

The Odyssey Neo G9 model to be featured in the show is 57-inch big, 37 percent larger than the 49-inch previous model, and has a curved design of 1000R (curvature of a monitor that would form a perfect circle with a radius of 1000mm).

This product is the first in the world to support dual UHD resolution and uses as its light source “Quantum Mini LED,” which is 1/40 the size of the existing light emitting diode (LED).
