LG Elec to further advance AI technology

LG AI Research, artificial intelligence think tank of South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc., will establish Ambient Computing platform this year to lead a hyper-connected world.

According to LG AI Research on Sunday, the think tank has picked Ambient Computing platform as a strategic agenda for this year. Ambient Computing is an intelligent solution in which a big data-based AI recognizes and judges overall situation and proposes specific work without user manipulation.

For example, an AI compiles an individual’s habits of his or her air condition use and proposes whether to turn on or off the cooling home appliance when room temperature reaches a certain level. It also recommends optimum temperature and air flow.

LG AI Research plans to focus on advancing AI original technology such as multimodal interface that utilizes various sensors, space and user state recognition based on voice, image, and videos, and logic inference through context and sensibility conversation. The think tank will also continue to seek core technology in new business sectors like digital healthcare, extended reality, and metaverse.

For the advance in AI technology, LG Electronics has recruited AI expert Kim Jeong-hee as chief of LG AI Research who will play the role in enhancing customer experience. Kim, who studied electric engineering at Seoul National University, joined LG Electronics in 1999 and worked in AI sector for more than 10 years. And then he worked as head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Lab at Hyundai Motor Group and at Naver Labs. Kim has focused on solution development through AI technology such as voice, image, and video recognition, real-time translation, vision test, automatic driving, and robotics.
