The training and dressing of the Greek Presidential Guard

epa10383551 People take pictures as Greek Presidential Guards perform a change of shift outside the Parliament building in central Athens, Greece, 18 December 2022 (issued 31 December 2022). The soldiers of the Presidential Guard are known throughout the world as the 'Evzones.' The word (Evzones) was used in the ancient Greek language to describe those who were 'well girded,' i.e. well armored. Now they are a symbol of remarkable discipline.

The unit was founded on 12 December 1868 under the name 'Agima,' and received the name 'Presidential Guard' for the first time with the restoration of the democracy in 1974. Its soldiers are in charge of guarding the Presidential Palace, honoring the President of the Hellenic Republic, and other heads of state visiting the country. But its main mission is the guarding of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. During their one-hour watch, the Presidential Guards must stand completely still, speechless, and expressionless, under all weather conditions. Countless are the tributes of foreign television crews during extreme weather phenomena where the Evzones stand stoically still. They remain motionless even during violent demonstrations that too often break out before their eyes. Rocks, plastic bottles and sometimes Molotov cocktails may fly over them, their eyes may water from the chemicals thrown by the police, but nothing seems to faze them.
