Newly constructed animal shelters at a forested area of Debrecen, Hungary

epa10381306 A newly constructed tiny shelter for butterflies is attached to a tree along a public educational trail in a forested area in Debrecen, northeastern Hungary, 28 December 2022 (issued 29 December 2022). The one-thousand-hectare protected area called Nagyerdo (Grand Forest) was heavily damaged in World War II. In later decades, the composition of its flora has changed due to the receding ground water levels, but it remained predominantly a common oak forest, as oak is very tolerant to soil conditions. This managed habitat is currently home to 51 protected species of vertebrates and 39 protected species of invertebrates. EPA/ZSOLT CZEGLEDI HUNGARY OUT
