LG Display will showcase a series of automotive displays at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas, pivoting to automobiles in the face of sluggish demand for panels used in smartphones and TVs.
This is the first time that the panel marker will set up a section dedicated to automotive displays.
The lineups include plastic organic light-emitting diode panels, which use elastic plastics instead of glass that offer high quality and can easily bend.
Also on display is a liquid-crystal display (LCD) based on low-temperature polycrystalline silicon that offers better picture quality than conventional LCDs. It enables higher resolution and higher electron mobility.
Other innovative technologies will also be presented such as a 3-D dashboard that people can view without special glasses.
LG Display will also introduce its Thin Actuator Sound Solution which achieves a much thinner and lighter form factor compared to conventional speakers. Sound is produced by utilizing various car body materials as a diaphragm.
The device vibrates off display panels and various materials inside the car body to enable a rich, 3-D immersive sound experience.
“LG Display will make innovations in the mobility sector based on our distinctive technologies in the automotive display business, which is the core component in future vehicles,” said Kim Byeong-koo, vice president at LG Display’s auto business.
The movement comes amid sharply dropping sales of displays for TVs and smartphones globally.
The company said earlier in the month it is reviewing an end to production at its LCD TV panel factory in Paju, Gyeonggi, without specifying an exact date.
LG Display posted 1.2 trillion won ($936.3 million) in operating loss in the second and third quarters combined due to the bearish demand and increasing competition, especially from China. Still, the automotive display segment posted solid growth in sales, according to analysts.
The automotive display market is expected to increase at an annual rate of 8.7 percent to reach $10.5 billion in 2025, according to market tracker Omdia.
