Global sales of 8K resolution TVs, which South Korean manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. account for 70 percent of the market, is projected to fall for the first time next year as the European Union is set to strengthen energy efficiency rule on the products.

According to multiple industry sources on Monday, global technology industry tracker Omdia in its revised forecast projected that 8K TV market will contract 5.8 percent next year. It is the first annual contraction since 8K TVs were first introduced in 2020.

8K resolution TVs are new premium models with horizontal resolution of about 8,000 pixels, which is four times more than a 4K TV.

Korean TV industry has been putting out efforts to expand 8K TV supply by boosting marketing before the World Cup games. Despite these efforts, the outlook for 8K TV market is sluggish due to weak global economy and regulations in the EU, the largest market for 8K TVs.

EU plans to apply enhanced TV energy efficiency standard from March. Sales of 8K and micro LED TVs will be blocked should they not meet the energy efficiency index (EEI) of 0.9 or less. Currently, all of Samsung and LG’s 8K TV and micro LED TVs don’t meet the new standard.

The Korean government has asked the EU for a revision in the energy efficiency regulation related to 8K TVs. The EU, however, remains adamant.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a U.S. market research firm, noted that the EU will push forward with the rule as planned in March and this will slow growth of 8K TV market next year.
