Hyundai Mobis, Sinclair develop digital broadcasting system

Hyundai Mobis will initiate a pilot project on digital broadcasting in the United States with Sinclair Broadcast Group, a Hunt Valley, Maryland-based telecommunications provider.

The two parties will provide in-vehicle infotainment and data transmission systems based on a broadcasting standard called ATSC 3.0.

Compared to its predecessors, including ATSC 1.0, the new standard is able to deliver better sound and picture quality that promises high resolutions of up to 8K. 8K is the highest resolution currently available for display panels, with a width of roughly 8,000 pixels.

With the advanced standard, the companies' digital broadcasting systems will come with an enhanced targeting feature of delivering different content or advertisements to consumers based on their geographic location. It is also fitted with improved GPS, in-vehicle entertainment and real-time emergency information.

As part of the project, Hyundai Mobis was responsible for developing a system that sends and receives the new broadcasting spectrum in the in-vehicle displays.

The Korean automotive unit began a trial implementation of the broadcasting system in Washington and Baltimore.

The joint project is born out of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last October.

"This collaboration is an important step toward realizing the promise of using ATSC 3.0 to communicate with the millions of vehicles on America’s roads and to greater serve the American public interest,” Chris Ripley, Sinclair’s President and CEO said in a statement about the MOU.

“By collaborating with Hyundai Mobis, we can make these services seamless for consumers while providing the efficiency and robustness of ATSC 3.0 for service providers,” Ripley said.
