SK Innovation and wholly-owned subsidiary SK On will be heavily promoting their latest battery at the upcoming CES 2023 trade show in Las Vegas, which is scheduled to kick off on Jan. 5.
SK Innovation will open a shared booth with its subsidiaries including SK On, SK geo centric, and SK ie technology at the annual event, to showcase its activities related to reducing carbon emissions.
The Super Fast Battery developed by SK On will be on display, which has 83 percent nickel content and can run more than 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) per charge. The high-performance and high-nickel batteries allow the car to be charged to 80 percent in only 18 minutes, the fastest in the market so far. Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5 and Kia's EV6 have SK On batteries.
A trial solid-state battery product will also be on display, which is currently under development by Louisville, Colorado-based Solid Power. SK Innovation in Oct. 2021 invested $30 million into the battery company.
Solid-state batteries are touted as "dream batteries" for their high energy density and safety. The Solid Power's battery is likely to have around 33 percent more energy density than a lithium-ion battery and will be able to run some 930 kilometers per single charge.
SK ie technology will be pitching its "Flexible Cover Window (FCW)," a flexible display component expected to be used in foldable smartphones in the near future. Consisting of transparent Pl film and a hard coating, FCW is a new-generation material to replace the glass cover window of foldable phones and IT devices.
A total of five products from SK Innovation and its subsidiaries won eight Innovation Awards from CES ahead of the exhibition next month. Of them, SK On's battery and SK ie technology's FCW won the “Best of Innovation” titles.
SK geo centric will market its uni-directional (UD) tape, a high-functional composite material with plastic structures reinforced with a fiber-type agent. With a relatively higher content of the reinforcing agent than other materials, the UD tape is considered to be a lightweight material that can replace metallic materials, it said.
SK energy and SK earthon will introduce their carbon capture and utilization storage technology while SK Innovation will show its technologies to recycle used batteries.
"SK Innovation will introduce our eco-friendly business strategies and the direction of our future business at the CES 2023, the global event that the whole world is paying attention," said Kim Woo-kyung, vice president at SK Innovation's PR team. "We will continue our investment and cooperation with global companies with high potential across the globe."
