SK’s MCR DIMM [Provided by SK hynix]
SK hynix announced Thursday that it developed samples of DDR5 Multiplex Combined Rands (MCR) Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM), the world’s fastest server DRAM product. Its new product operates at a data speed of minimum 8 Gigabits per second (Gbps), 80 percent faster than the previous models’ 4.8Gbps.

SK’s MCR DIMM is a module product with multiple DRAM chips attached to the board. Its speed is improved due to two ranks operating simultaneously. The achievement was possible as its engineers challenged the prevailing concept that the operation speed of DDR5 relies on that of the DRAM chip.

By enabling the simultaneous operation of two ranks, MCR DIMM allows the transmission of 128 bytes of data to the CPU at once, compared with 64 bytes in conventional DRAM modules. An increase in the amount of data sent to the CPU each time supports the data transfer rate of minimum 8Gbps, twice as fast as a single DRAM.

The firm attributed its success to a close collaboration with Intel Corp. and Renesas Electronics Corp. “Our achievement was possible based on Intel’s excellence in Xeon processor and Renesas’ buffer technology,” said Sungsoo Ryu, head of the DRAM product planning division. “We will intensify our competitiveness in the DRAM market through technological innovation.”

SK hynix shares were down 0.4 percent to 78,600 won ($59.50) as of 2:56 p.m. Thursday.
