SK ecoplant, Denmark's COWI sign MOU for offshore wind farm projects in Korea

SK ecoplant said on Wednesday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Denmark’s COWI for offshore wind farm projects in Korea.

SK ecoplant said on Wednesday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Denmark’s COWI for offshore wind farm projects in Korea.

COWI, based in Lyngby, Denmark, is a consulting and engineering company specializing in renewable energy.

The MOU outlines a comprehensive plan for cooperation between COWI and SK ecoplant for the local company’s wind farm projects off the coasts of Ulsan and Yeonggwang, South Jeolla, according to SK ecoplant. The two companies hope to strengthen technological cooperation as well.

SK ecoplant, renamed from SK Engineering and Construction last year, is currently developing a 136-megawatt wind farm off the coast of Ulsan and a 1-gigawatt offshore wind plant in Yeongnam.

The signing ceremony was held in Copenhagen on Monday, with SK ecoplant CEO Park Kyung-il and Jan Behrendt Ibso, senior market director of COWI, in attendance.

Park met with representatives from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Copenhagen Offshore Partners for future business cooperation as well. Samkang M&T, a wind plant part supplier of SK ecoplant, is supplying jacket foundations, the structures that hold offshore wind turbines, for CIP’s construction projects in Taiwan.

SK ecoplant acquired 35.7 percent of Kosdaq-listed Samkang M&T in August at the price of 460 billion won ($347.9 million) to become its largest shareholder.

“It is meaningful for us that we could strengthen our ties and discuss new business opportunities with the global companies based in Denmark, the leading country in offshore wind plants,” said Park.
