Complaints arise against temporary measure

By Park Gyu Jun

SPC Group decided to sell its bread to franchisees of Paris Baguette facing boycott for 10 percent lower prices temporarily. By purchasing bread from the franchise headquarters for lower prices, the franchisees have been able to increase their profit margins.

According to industry officials, Monday, the Paris Baguette franchise headquarters decided to give its franchisees a 10 percent discount on their purchase of bread and other minor ingredients. The measure is valid between Nov. 18 and Dec. 7.

In other words, if a franchisee previously bought bread for 1,000 won ($0.7) from the franchiser and sold it to consumers for 1,500 won, the franchisee’s purchasing price falls to 900 won, increasing the profit margin to 600 won from 500 won. A Paris Baguette franchisee said: “Most franchisees spend 30 million won every month on average to buy ingredients from the headquarters, so they will be able to save 3 million won per month.”

The temporary offer, however, caused complaints from some franchisees.

“Although there is no discount on frozen foods and products with longer shelf lives, such as jam, chocolate and ice cream, I have been able to buy hundreds of products, including bread and minor ingredients, for 10 percent lower prices,” another Paris Baguette franchisee said. “However, it is regrettable that the discount is offered for only three weeks.”

The number of types of unpopular products that can be returned from Paris Baguette bakeries to the franchise headquarters was already increased by SPC to 35. However, a group of franchisees is considering asking the franchise headquarters to compensate for their damages, so as to brace for a prolonged boycott.
