An initial estimate by nonprofit group Gift of the Givers on scene indicates more than 800 shacks were destroyed and more than 1,500 people displaced in the fire which raged 21 November. Nonprofit groups Gift of the Givers and Living Hope are providing humanitarian aid in the densely populated Masiphumelele shack district. Masiphumelele is particularly susceptible to fire with poor access routes hampering firefighting efforts. This was the second big fire in a month in the area. EPA/NIC BOTHMA
