Samsung Electronics claimed the largest share in the television market worldwide in the third quarter despite all-around lower TV sales due to weakening demand.

Samsung Electronics claimed the largest share in the television market worldwide in the third quarter despite all-around lower TV sales due to weakening demand.

The Suwon, Gyeonggi-based manufacturer recorded a 30.2 percent share between July and September, the same level as last year, according to market tracker Omdia on Monday.

LG Electronics came in at second place with a 17 percent share although it holds the biggest share, 60 percent, in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV segment.

Global television sales fell 4.4 percent to 143 million units from a year ago in the third quarter on low demand and a multitude of economic and geopolitical uncertainties.

The size of the global TV market shrank 12.7 percent on year to $72.4 billion in the third quarter.

In the premium TV segment, which includes TVs priced at or above $2,500, Samsung took up 51.1 percent of the global market, followed by LG with 21.2 percent.

Samsung Electronics markets its premium models under its Neo QLED brand.

Since 2017, more than 36.5 million units of Samsung's Neo QLED TVs have been sold, surpassing the 30 million mark in the first half, according to the company.

In the meantime, LG kept its solid No. 1 spot in the OLED TV segment by selling 2.54 million units in the third quarter, about 60 percent of all global OLED shipments.

LG surpassed the 14 million mark in cumulative shipments since starting in 2013 with its first shipment of OLED TVs.

OLED TVs accounted for 33.7 percent of all TV sales by LG in the third quarter, up 0.9 percent on year.
