South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries said on Thursday its carbon reduction methodology for Scope 3 (all indirect emissions not included in Scope 2) ship operation has been certified by Korean Foundation for Quality for the first time in the shipbuilding industry.

The Scope 3 carbon reduction methodology at the ship operation stage was designed to measure how much the shipbuilder’s eco-friendly ships delivered to customers contribute to carbon reduction.

Carbon emissions are on the international scope and a company’s greenhouse gas emissions are classified into three scopes. Scope 1 and 2 are mandatory to report, while Scope 3 is voluntary and the most difficult to monitor.

Samsung Heavy Industries calculated carbon reduction contribution based on the extent to which the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) value of its eco-friendly ships has improved compared to the accepted EEDI value set by the International Maritime Organization.

EEDI is an indexed value of the amount of carbon dioxide emitted when a ship transports 1 ton of cargo for 1 nautical mile, and ships that fail to meet the IMO’s accepted EEDI value are unable to operate.

Under this method, the carbon reduction contributions from the shipbuilder’s 22 vessels delivered to customers from January to August this year were projected to total 10.58 million tons over a 24-year life cycle on average. This is equivalent to the total carbon emissions from 5.95 million passenger vehicles driven for a year.

This methodology was internally certified by a carbon reduction certification committee at Samsung EHS Strategy Research Institute.

Developing low-carbon innovative technology is Samsung Heavy Industries’ key competitive edges and sustainable business strategy, said the shipbuilder.
