SWITZERLAND ANIMALS EUROPEAN BISON PROJECT

Swiss project aims to test whether European bisons are sustainable as a wild animal in the Jura

epa10283539 European bisons are photographed in a 50 hectares enclosure of the "Projekt Wisent Thal", in Welschenrohr, Switzerland, 03 November 2022. After seven weeks of stay, the acclimatization enclosure is opened and the European bisons can now use the 50 hectares enclosure. This enclosure includes about 37 hectares of forest and 13 hectares of meadows and pastures. The European bisons can use the 50 hectares enclosure during the next two years, from the thrid year the enclosure will be extended to 100 hectares. The aim of the project is to use a bison test herd in an area of around 100 hectares to investigate whether the bison, which was wiped out in the Middle Ages, is now sustainable as a wild animal in the Jura.
