Remains of general Gonzalo Queipo de Llano exhumed from La Macarena Basilica in Seville

In order to obey the new Democratic Memory Law, the remains of General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano, who took part in the Spanish coup of July 1936, have been exhumed from the Basilica along with his wife's remains and those of General Francisco Bohorquez Vecina, who was his right hand during the first years of Franco's dictatorship. The Democratic Memory Law that came into effect in October 2022, orders the exhumation of dictatorship leaders who took part in the Spanish coup of July 1936, whose remains are not allowed to be buried in any prominent location other than a cemetery with access to public. The law aims to avoid public events of exaltation or commemoration of the Human Rights violations that took place during the Spanish Civil War or during the Dictatorship. EPA/RAUL CARO
