Festival of Giant Kites in the municipality of Sumpango, Guatemala

epa10280404 Thousands of people participate in the Giant Kites festival, in the municipality of Sumpango, Sacatepequez, Guatemala, 01 November 2022. 40 organizations raised giant kites of 10 to 15 meters made with bamboo and Chinese paper. The kites have artistic and social themes, and the largest ones cannot fly because of their size, but there are competitions. The tradition of raising kites in Guatemala is done to ward off evil spirits and send messages to loved ones on the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated on 01 November. In the local cemetery, entire families come to fix and paint the tombs while throwing Cempasuchil flowers or 'flower of the dead'. EPA/Esteban Biba
