The Mariquelo rings the bells of Salamanca's New Cathedral

epa10276822 Angel Rufino de Haro, the so-called 'Mariquelo', observes the tradition of climbing up the New Cathedral's bell tower in Salamanca, Spain, 31 October 2022, to ring the bells. Every year, since 1755, the 'Mariquelo' walks up the 300 steps of the clock tower to ring the bells on 31 October to thank God for preserving the city's cathedral during the Great Lisbon Earthquake, which also shook Salamanca, located 467 kms from Portugal's capital. No one in Salamanca died during the earthquake and the cathedral, that had been recently completed, was only slightly damaged. This is why the Mariquelos, the family that was in charge of taking care of the cathedral, started the tradition of ringing the bells to thank God. EPA/JM GARCIA
